The tech job market continues to reach new heights in the software, hardware and mechanical space. Triple Crown saw significant growth for engineering consultants during the first quarter of 2022. While the numbers of jobs are increasing the competition for qualified candidates continues to increase as well. As a leader in providing talent solutions, we understand that it can be difficult to keep up with the ever-changing job market.

Here is a breakdown of our Q1 tech hiring and job trends.

Hiring Trends

With 68 business days in the quarter on average we saw our account management team helping clients with 13 new job openings per day. Throughout the quarter there was steady growth and overall we saw a 3.4% increase from January to March.

In the first quarter of 2022 embedded opportunities contributed 24% to the demand with specialized engineers coming in second contributing 19%. The specialized category consists of engineers who have a unique background or those who have hardware and software experience. Here are the job openings broken down by category along with the top ten skills that are most in demand.

We are not surprised to see C++, Java and C at the top of list since these are critical programming languages for our embedded software engineers which are highest in demand.

Although remote work is still being heavily pursued by candidates, many more clients are transitioning to partial remote work in preparation to make a full return to the office. From Q4 2021 to Q1 2022 partial remote work rose from 5% to 28%. We expect this trend to stay the same and possibly even rise. Overall candidates and clients are still leaning more towards a flexible and remote work schedule.

Stay Ahead Of Trends

Our Q1 2022 report provides insight on staffing and hiring trends in the software, hardware and mechanical engineering space. In Q2 we anticipate job openings increasing by 4-7% with embedded software, digital design and, digital verification being the most in demand categories. With more businesses returning back to the office we also foresee that more clients will offer a partial remote working schedule to meet candidates in the middle and keep them satisfied.
