Overview
A global leader in aerospace propulsion systems partnered with Triple Crown to develop standardized engineering design manuals for its Lansing, Michigan manufacturing and repair facility. The organization needed to capture critical engineering knowledge, document design standards, and create consistent technical documentation that aligned with corporate practices. What began as a documentation project quickly evolved into a collaborative engineering effort requiring in-depth research, technical expertise, and close partnership with the client’s design teams.
Challenge
The client’s Lansing manufacturing and repair facility required its engineering processes and design standards to be consolidated into the official standard of work for the facility. Facility leaders envisioned a series of comprehensive, technical design manuals covering the core disciplines at the site. The client provided example manuals from its headquarters site in East Hartford, CT as a reference, but the facility’s specialized work required documentation tailored to its own products, processes, and engineering practices.
This work scope required more than compiling existing information; Triple Crown’s team needed to conduct extensive review of existing legacy and current designs, collaborate directly with the facility’s design engineers, and determine which requirements, methods, and design considerations should be captured. The evolving nature of the research also revealed the need for additional content and an expanded project scope.
Project Execution
Triple Crown kicked off the project with the client in October 2025. During the initial research phase, the team worked closely with the facility’s engineers to understand its designs, processes, and documentation requirements.
The project lead divided responsibility for researching and outlining the manuals among the three engineers. The outlines were submitted for client review and approval by December, with full manual development beginning in January.
The project is supported by a structured communication and review process including:
- Weekly meetings with the client’s site and engineering leadership
- Twice-weekly internal Triple Crown project meetings
- Ongoing collaboration with subject-matter experts and design engineers
- Regular outline, draft, and content reviews
- Active oversight from Triple Crown’s Director of Technical Programs and project lead
- Adjustments to team responsibilities as the project and staffing needs evolved
This structure has allowed the team to respond to new findings, incorporate additional scope, and maintain alignment with the client’s requirements and schedule.
Deliverables
Triple Crown is developing 17 engineering design manuals customized for the manufacturing facility. The manuals address engineering practices associated with the facility’s commercial aerospace products and support equipment, including composite structures, C-ducts, bellmouths, lower aft pylon fairings, and equipment used to hold, transport, and service aircraft engine components.
Results
To date, 14 manuals have been completed, with the remaining 3 actively in development. The remaining design manuals are expected to be completed in early fall.
